Facebook Topics to Watch – ‘Digital Video’ Seeing Big, Sustained Growth [Infographic]

Facebook has released the third of its now monthly 'Topics to Watch' reports, highlighting the subjects gaining the most traction in terms of conversation volume across The Social Network.

But more than merely the number of mentions of each, Facebook's data team is tracking topics with the most significant growth potential, the subjects most likely to become 'the next big thing'

As described by Facebook:

"Topics to Watch are conversation topics that have shown long-term growth on Facebook, which we predict will likely continue to grow. The discussion about these topics mirrors the volume, variance and measures of consistent growth shown in other conversation topics which grew consistently. If another topic shows similar early growth patterns to previous topics with long-term growth (such as Kale) we can expect it to continue increasing"

According to Facebook, 80% of the topics they've identified in this way have gone on to become more prominent trends, so it's probably worth paying attention to what they say.

So what has Facebook's research team identified as the next trending topics?

It's an interesting list – of course, anyone who works in social media or digital marketing knows that 'Digital Video' is a trending topic, though it's interesting to note that huge growth spurt in recent months and the popularity amongst younger users.

Facebook announced a major update to Facebook Live in April, which likely has some bearing on that big spike in interest, but even aside from that big leap, the discussion volume has stayed very high, again pointing to the increased interest in video content on The Social Network.

People are also pretty keen on 'Moroccan cuisine' these days, with a huge spike in conversation volume, while 'Glitter' seems like an odd trend to pick out.

The interesting thing about Facebook's 'Topics to Watch' is that it provides a window into what's happening, it gives brands and marketers ideas as to what issues are trending, which could then help spark inspiration as to how they can use the same in their marketing and outreach. As noted, Facebook's data team have become very good at picking the next big trends based on this data, so it's worth paying attention and considering how you might be able to use this info to reach your target audience.
