Here are some interesting studies to note:

Social Media Study: The Psychology of Sharing: A recent New York Times study outlined the six personas of online sharers as defined by their motivations, desired self-presentation and value of being the first to share. Eighty-four percent of respondents share to support causes or brands they care about. Seventy-three percent say they process information more deeply when they share it with someone else. The study also reveals what factors determine the likelihood of content being shared, essential steps for marketers who want to get their content shared and the cycle of sharing.

STUDY: 2014 BDO Retail Compass Survey of CMOs: A BDO study surveying 100 CMOs at leading U.S. retailers found that social media continues to rise as a preferred online marketing channel, with 84% of the retailers surveyed using it this holiday season and 34% anticipating that it will be their most profitable online promotional tactic. A majority of retailers (76%) will focus their efforts on Facebook campaigns, while Twitter and LinkedIn remain the second and third most popular social networks, 27% and 21% respectively.

State of the Industry: The past, present and future of retargeting according to 1,000 marketers and 11,000 ad campaigns: Data from digital marketing firm AdRoll finds that digital marketers are spending more of their online ad budgets on retargeting. Seventy-one percent of respondents say that 10-50% of their digital marketing budget goes towards retargeting, up from 53% in 2013. Ninety-two percent report retargeting performs equal to or better than search, 91% equal to or better than email and 92% equal to or better than other display ads. For both B2B and B2C marketers, 50% say social media is the single hottest topic in retargeting.

Sales Cycle: What Content Goes Where?: A recent report from Eccolo Media based on data from a survey of over 100 people at B2B companies who are either responsible for buying decisions (67% of respondents) or influence buying decisions (33%) found that short, text-based content (blogs and newsletters) are most valuable early in the sales cycle. Time-intensive content types (videos, detailed guides, etc.) are most useful right before making a decision. Eighty percent of buyers want to continue to receive content after a sale is completed.

Email Marketing Six Times More Effective Than Social Media, Says Study: UK website, Give As You Live, surveyed more than 4,000 UK shoppers in November 2014 and found almost two-thirds (64%) would stop what they were doing to click an email link from a retailer. Just 10% would do the same for a link seen on a social media site. Links to fashion websites (40%) were the most likely to entice a potential shopper, ahead of travel websites (28%) and DVD/gaming websites (25%).

Whippies 2014—The Best Sites of the Year on Facebook and Twitter: Technology company Newswhip ranked the best-performing publishers on Twitter and Facebook in 2014 based on their exclusive data on overall engagement. They also noted some top-performing newcomers of the year.
