Don’t Use The LinkedIn Mobile App Without Knowing These Tips

Don't Use LinkedIn Mobile App Without Knowing These Tips | Social Media TodayYou can't always be at your computer. Sometimes life, whether for business or pleasure, takes you away from your desk.

And while you may not want to stay engaged with your LinkedIn network during your off time, there will be times when you want to be able to stay connected to LinkedIn, such as if you are traveling for work, at an event or just away from your desk while waiting for a reply to an important message.

Thankfully, there's an app for that. That app would be the LinkedIn Mobile app (although LinkedIn has several mobile apps, which you can learn about here).

As you will see, you're able do many of the things on the LinkedIn Mobile app that you can do via your desktop or laptop, although I would caution you against doing some of those things with the mobile app.

The home tab is essentially your news feed page. Here you can stay up-to-date on the posts of your connections and share your own status updates.

You can easily like, comment or share posts with few quick taps. When commenting or sharing I would caution you to review your comment to ensure that there are no spelling or grammar errors, which can easily happen when you are typing on your mobile device.

You can add your own status update by hitting Share or Photo at the top of the screen.

When posting a status update you can add links, photos, videos and of course, @ mention other LinkedIn Members.

To link to something (like a video or article) just copy the link on your device. Tap on the link icon and this will open a box where you can paste it. Hit the preview that it pulls up to add the link to your update. Finish by adding your text (and any @ mentions if appropriate) and tap Share.

To mention someone, just click on the @ icon at the bottom of the screen (or type in the @ sign) and then type in the person's name. Like the computer version, this will list a variety of results. Simply tap the correct one to add the person.

Tap the camera icon to add a photo. If you want to add photos from your photo roll or use your camera, the app will ask for permission the first time to access these.

Under My Network you can see the new updates from your connections and people you may know as well as access your Invitations and Connections list.

To take action on an update, tap the thumbs up (like) or hit the linked text (such as Say congrats) to leave an appropriate comment. If you don't want to take action on a particular update, simply swipe left.

I would caution you from "connecting" with anyone from this page. While it's quick and easy to tap the like + person icon, this will send the default connection requests and with just five people clicking on I don't know or Spam will land you in LinkedIn Jail.

To accept any connection requests that have been sent to you, tap Invitations. From here you can tap the checkmark to accept or the X to ignore.

While you can easily accept new connections on your mobile device, I would avoid using your phone to do this if you are running a lead generation campaign. The reason for this is that you're not able to see any personalized connection messages nor are you able to tag them or add other notes to their profile.

You can scroll through your connections list by tapping on Connections at the top of the screen (note: if you have a sizable network, this could take a while to load).

The message center on the LinkedIn Mobile app is similar to the desktop version and other social media messaging areas.

You can see a list of your recent communications, with unread threads appearing bolder.

Like the desktop message area, you can add add emoticons and animated GIFs by taping the smiley face icon. As I wrote in my article on LinkedIn's new message center, I would, again, caution you from using these on LinkedIn.

While they have an excellent selection, this is a business platform and you should keep your communications more formal and professional here.

This area functions the same way as your Notifications section on the desktop version.

Tap on a notification to be taken to view it or engage with it. In the case of comments or shares to your status updates and Publisher posts, you can choose to like or reply. When commenting, I would remind you to double check for any errors before hitting Post.

Here you can see and edit your LinkedIn profile.

Except for changes that are more urgent in nature, I would recommend NOT making modifications to your LinkedIn profile on the mobile app.

In order to ensure that your information takes advantage of the character limits in each section, is free from errors and is formatted correctly, you're best to make all profile changes from your desktop computer.

You can search for people, companies, jobs, groups and schools on the mobile app. Simply type something into the search box at the top of the screen.

Below the top people results you'll see the ability to search for companies, jobs, groups and schools.

To refine your people searches, tap the icon to the right of the search box. This will open up the advanced mobile search.

While not as comprehensive as the desktop, it'll still allow you narrow your results by level of connection, location, current company and industry.

You never know when you'll bump into someone you want to connect with on LinkedIn.

Rather than forgetting to do it when you get home, the LinkedIn Mobile app is a great way to connect with people wherever you are at the moment.

Go to the profile of the person you wish to connect with. Tap on the three horizontal dots in the top right corner of their profile.

Hit Personalize Invite.

Type in your personalized request, reminding them who you are and how you met. Again ensure that your grammar and spelling are correct before hitting Send.

The LinkedIn Mobile App is a great way to stay on top of your LinkedIn activities while you're away from your desk. Make the most of the app's features to ensure that you connect with people as you meet them in the real world and stay on top of important communications but leave the more complex activities until you are back at your desk.
