Have you ever posted a photo you thought was really great to Instagram and then…no one liked it? You may be posting along the lines of some well-known Instagram cliches (people can handle only a finite number of cats, manicures, and "Outfit of the day"…). On the other hand, maybe you just picked the wrong filter. It's the superficial stuff – lighting, whether or not you're making a duckface in your selfie – that can sometimes make all the difference.

So, don't be jealous of those out there with better Instagram game (seriously, sometimes I wonder, how can someone post a picture of, um, lasagna, and get 400 likes?). Just read these tips for better posts, provided by the folks at Curalate.

The lighter the image, the better (24 percent more likes).Give us more background, less close-up (29 percent more likes).Bluish, or cold, images fare better than reddish, or warm, images (24 percent).Images with lower saturation get more like than those with more (18 percent).
