Mobile v. Desktop: What Any Online Business Should Know [INFOGRAPHIC]

Chocolate versus vanilla. Team Jacob versus Team Edward. Toilet paper roll overhand versus toilet paper roll underhand. (This one's been solved, actually.) Such are the great questions and conflicts of our time, but a more pressing (and perhaps more consequential) issue is Mobile versus Desktop. While mobile has rocketed to prominence in recent years, online businesses and marketers can't afford to ignore either one.

This wonderful infographic from Colm Stafford of ERS Computer Solutions demonstrates exactly why. Among other interesting facts presented in the infographic, the most intriguing is that while desktop computing is still very big and continues to grow in absolute numbers, the day when mobile overtook desktop already came to pass … more than a year ago. Mobile is already here, as Google and other companies are well aware.

The other salient thing from the infographic to me is the fact that while mobile use has exploded, only 15% of mobile users make purchases that way. It seems that, despite growth, people are still wary of shopping via their mobile devices. I understand this completely. Despite the equal level of security between them, desktop just feels more solidly secure, the equivalent of making plans from your home base instead of out in the trenches.

However, this fact carries great weight when you also consider that 63% of mobile users use their devices to go on the internet and 62% use it to check email. This, along with the mobile e-commerce information, suggests that while online purchasing remains concentrated on the desktop, mobile is the purview of online advertising and marketing. So, depending on the needs of your online business, you may need to adjust your strategy accordingly.
