How to Choose the Best Comment System for Your Blog

social media how toDoes your business have a blog?

Do you allow comments?

One of a blogger's toughest tasks is managing the discussions around posts, and determining which comments are valuable and which are spam.

In this article I'll explore top blog commenting systems and the features that make them a great choice for your blog.

Whenever you post content, it is almost guaranteed you will receive some spam in your blog comments. People will submit comments that are completely irrelevant to the discussion to get exposure for themselves or drop a link to their website.

choose a comment system for your blog Discover how to choose a comment system for you blog.

Remember, there is no comment system, plugin or tactic that will fully eliminate spam. Even if you require registration, people who want to leave spam will simply register and then leave spam comments.

Requiring registration or using advanced commenting systems will reduce the amount of spam you receive. However, it may also lower the overall number of comments you receive. This is something to consider when you choose a blog comment system and configure your settings.

Most blogging platforms such as WordPress, Blogger and Tumblr have a built-in commenting component. With Drupal, the default comment module must be enabled.

Depending on your platform, the base comment system will allow you to configure options, such as whether people need to register for your website to comment or they can freely comment with their name, email and website address.

wordpress blog comment system example WordPress is one blogging platform with a base comment system built in.

The main reason to use the base comment system is that it doesn't involve any additions to your website. It is usually ready to go when you set up your website. The second reason is speed. A past study by Pingdom revealed that the base comment system on WordPress is faster than the top third-party comment systems.

The downside of the base comment system on any blogging platform is that it will only have basic features. Advanced moderation functionality and spam-handling involves adding plugins to your website.

For WordPress self-hosted websites, you can install plugins like Akismet, which uses algorithms to detect and automatically filter out spam. WordPress and Drupal users can also try Mollom, which works similarly to Akismet to help combat spam. Akismet is the more popular of the two, as it comes installed on most WordPress blogs.

Most people will be familiar with the base commenting system from any of the top platforms. The only missing element for some comment authors on these systems are their photos, as only other bloggers will have images linked to their emails or accounts.

The second most-used commenting system is Facebook Comments, which is mostly due to the fact that Facebook is the most popular social media network. With 968 million daily active users, you can be assured that people who visit your blog will not only have a Facebook account, but will also be logged into it.

facebook comment system example Facebook is the second most-used commenting system, since it's the most popular social network and users are likely already logged in.

Blog visitors can either choose to comment with a personal profile or use the drop-down menu by the Post button to use a Facebook business page instead. They will get notifications when their comment receives likes or replies through Facebook.

This system will help you, as a blog owner and content creator, get to know the people who read and comment on your posts. Depending on the comment author's privacy settings, you will see the commenter's location, job title, school and other relevant information.

Plus, there's a built-in social sharing option. Commenters can check a box to also post on Facebook, which allows them to quickly share your post to their Facebook audience while commenting.

Facebook Comments are great for blogs where people won't mind being publicly linked to their comments. On the other hand, people may be less likely to comment with their photo and profile link on blogs that cover more personal topics.

There are several ways to install Facebook Comments. Use the Comments Plugin Code Generator to grab code and install it on your website as directed or the Facebook Comments plugin for WordPress. Shopify users can get the FB Comments app for $2.99 a month. Joomla and Drupal also have add-ons and extension options.

If you're a regular reader of websites like ABC News, TMZ, Mother Jones or Fashionista, you're already familiar with Disqus.

This comment system requires comment authors to create an account with Disqus via email or their Facebook, Twitter or Google+ profiles. Once someone creates an account, they can use it on any website with the Disqus comment system.

disqus comment system example The Disqus comment system is used on sites like Fashionista, ABC News and more.

Whenever someone leaves a comment using Disqus, they will get notified via email each time the blog post gets a new comment, when someone likes their comment and when they get a direct reply from someone. This is a great reminder for them to return to the discussion and your website. Disqus users can also tag specific people in a comment.

Plus, if someone wants to follow a conversation, they can subscribe to the comments of a blog post with or without commenting. Visitors can also share a particular discussion or the post on Twitter and Facebook, as well as flag comments they feel are inappropriate to help moderators find and remove them.

Business bloggers will love the advanced capabilities Disqus has to offer. Enable Disqus to publish comments, hold them all for moderation or allow only those with verified emails to be published. Set up additional moderators to login and moderate comments. Also, get analytics for all of your comments, information about specific commenters and much more.

Another great feature is the optional recommended stories box at the end of your Disqus comments. Use this to keep visitors on your website by directing them to other great posts or monetize this space by sharing posts from publishers advertising on Disqus.

disqus comment system recommended stories example Enable recommended stories from Disqus to keep visitors on your website.

Install Disqus on WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, Squarespace, TypePad, Moveable Type, Drupal and Joomla for free. Simply register for Disqus Engage, using the same account you use for commenting, and it will guide you through the setup process for each of these platforms.

Another popular comment system, Livefyre, is somewhat similar to Disqus. You've likely seen it on a variety of popular websites, including Hootsuite, CBS Sports, MarketWatch, CNET, New York Magazine and Salon.

Like Disqus, people who want to comment will need to sign up for a free Livefyre account, which they create using their email address or by signing into Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or LinkedIn. Comment authors can like comments, reply to comments and tag people.

livefyre comment system example Livefyre works similarly to Disqus.

Visitors are able to follow conversations with or without commenting, as well as share particular comments along with a link to the post on Twitter and Facebook. Plus, they can flag comments they find inappropriate.

Livefyre offers powerful administration features for blog owners, including spam protection, multiple moderators, whitelists, blacklists, individual activity reports and more.

Install Livefyre on WordPress and Tumblr blogs once you have created a free account or signed in with the account you use on Livefyre.

Which Comment System Is Best for You?

Your choice of blog commenting system will depend on the technology that works with your blogging platform or content management system. You will also want to figure out which one is most user-friendly for both you and your readers.

One way to choose is to do some research. Visit other popular blogs in your industry and see which ones get a lot of comments using a particular system. That might be the best option for you and your blog comments.

What do you think? What has been your experience with commenting systems? Which one do you use for your blog? Please share your thoughts and experience in the comments!

Smart Social Marketers Put Analytics First

For years now, social marketers have prioritized publishing over analytics to increase efficiency in their high-volume roles. This is understandable, but this bias for action causes them to ignore the need for informed decision-making. For marketers to find sustainable success from their social media programs, this has to change. Better social starts by putting analytics first.

smart marketers put analytics first

Social Network Ad Revenues 2015: A new forecast from eMarketer predicts that global social network ad spending will reach $25.14 billion in 2015, higher than the $23.68 billion forecast in April 2015. This rapid growth is specifically attributed to the increase in Facebook's ad revenue. This year, Facebook will take 64.8% of total social network ad spending worldwide and is expected to capture $16.29 billion in ad revenues worldwide, a jump of 41.8% over 2014.

2015 Recruiter Nation Survey: Findings from Jobvite's annual social recruiting survey shows that 92% of recruiters use social media to evaluate and engage talent. Not surprising, the top social media network utilized by recruiters is LinkedIn (87%), followed by Facebook (55%) and Twitter (47%). The report also shows that recruiters are open to using new networks like Snapchat (3%), Tumblr and even Periscope to learn about potential job candidates.

2015 Q2 Email Benchmark Report: According to a new report from Experian, email marketing campaigns using the word "choose" or "choice" in the subject line earned 22% higher revenue per email, a 46% increase in transaction rates and a 117% increase in transaction-to-click rates. While email volume rose by 16.1% in Q2 2015 compared to Q2 2014 and response rates stayed fairly constant, 51% of brands claimed to have seen significant year-over-year increases in transaction rates and revenue per email.

Ooyala Q2 Global Video Index: The latest quarterly video study from Ooyala reports that online video viewers using mobile phones spent two-thirds of their viewing time in Q2 2015 with content shorter than 10 minutes' duration. The report also notes that mobile devices accounted for 44% of video plays in Q2 2015.

How to Optimize Landing Pages to Boost Social Media Conversions

By Lesya Liu
Published October 6, 2015 Printer-Friendly

social media how toDo you want more conversions from your social traffic?

Are you using landing pages?

Directing targeted social media traffic to relevant landing pages helps you convert visitors into leads.

In this article you'll discover how to optimize landing pages to boost social media conversions.

Rather than direct social media traffic to your home page, landing pages let you send visitors to a page that facilitates the conversions you're after.

Landing pages are web pages that are built for a specific purpose, such as obtaining leads or getting signups for an event, and are accessible through a specific link. You use this link in social media posts and ads, thus making it easy to attribute the traffic that comes to the page from your social media channels.

optimze landing page to boost social media conversions Discover how to optimize landing pages to optimize conversions.

You should create separate landing pages to target segments of your audience with different offers. You can also split test the copy, layout and more so you can see which version is most effective in earning and converting leads.

Here's how you can get more social media conversions by using landing pages.

Think about who your ideal target market is. Consider their demographics, geographic locations, likes and needs. Then target these people through social media. Facebook, Twitter and now Instagram offer amazing targeting capabilities.

For example, say that you sell organic, easy-to-prepare dinners. You decide your target market consists of 35- to 45-year-old women with careers who live in metro areas, and are conscious about their diet choices.

plated facebook ad Your ad text should speak to your target.

When targeting, talk to your audience in their language and show that you understand what they want and need. Mention that you know they're always short on time but want to make the right choices for their families. Include a call to action to learn more about how "fast" and "healthy" don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Solidify your success with a landing page that further explains the benefits of your product, why they need it and how to get it. Include relevant images of happy, healthy families and a short video testimonial from a stylish happy mom who has two preteens.

plated landing page Your landing page should complement and support the message of your ad.

Include a special offer where people can receive a free dinner just for signing up for your newsletter. After you've crafted your targeting, messaging and offer, watch your conversion rates go up.

While you might know a lot about your target audience, there is always more you can learn. Suppose people aren't 100% sold on your business and don't want to receive your newsletter. Split test by creating another offer with a 20%-off coupon that they can use in any grocery store that carries your product.

Or maybe you want to experiment with the length of the text. You might be wondering if you should go into detail about your product and its benefits or write brief copy that simply encourages people to try the product. Or instead of pictures of a happy family, you think your audience would be more inspired by images of stylish, successful businesswomen.

split test image shutter stock 267116021 Test different components of your ad for performance. Image: Shutterstock.

You can gradually split test as many variables as you want and gain more insight into your buyers' psychology. It's best to test only one or two variables at a time to zero in on a cause-effect relationship and track the differences in data.

Discover What Makes a Good Landing Page

Effective landing pages consist of a brief punchy description, clear benefits, a few striking visual elements (such as images or a short video), a testimonial and a strong call to action. Most importantly, they tend to focus on one offer or one goal.

Here are some tips for building a successful landing page:

Keep your page crisp, clear and to the point. Focus on the benefits of a single offer. You can also tailor the page for visitors from a specific social network. For example, Pinterest is known for its inspirational, highly visual content, so use more striking images with this audience.Consistency across all of your digital channels is crucial. Ensure that you're not confusing potential leads with inconsistent offers. Be mindful that many people will be visiting your website for the first time, so take the time to create an amazing first impression of your brand as a whole.Make essential elements stand out so visitors don't have to look for signup forms or promotional details. You don't want to give them a reason to rethink their decision. The process should be as fast and easy as possible.plated lead capture form Make conversion as easy as possible.

Give people a reason to trust you and do business with you. Mention the benefits so they won't want to pass on the offer.Incorporate a single call to action. Avoid asking visitors to do multiple things, like sign up for your newsletter, buy your product and follow you on Facebook. Provide value first.Deliver on your promise. If your audience expects a "one-step sign-up form to receive a free sample today," don't make them jump through hoops to get there.

Conclusion

If you've ever signed up for an exclusive offer, a free ebook or a free copy of something as a result of sharing your email address, you've probably experienced the power of landing pages. So why not employ them in your social media marketing?

Create engaging, highly relevant landing pages that bring value to both new and existing customers and target qualified traffic via your social channels. Also don't underestimate the power of split testing, which can help you improve key parts of your pages and increase conversions. This might sound like a lot of work, but you'll likely see great results from your efforts.

What do you think? Have you ever used landing pages in your social media marketing? How have they worked for you? Please let us know in the comments section below.
